Uterine fibroids are a common gynecological condition in women of reproductive age. Most fibroids are benign, and not every case requires treatment.
A doctor may consider treatment when fibroids cause one or more of the following problems:
• Prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding, or abnormal uterine bleeding, which may lead to anemia.
• Pain or a feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen or pelvic area.
• Pressure on nearby organs, causing frequent or difficult urination or constipation.
• In some cases, affecting the ability to become pregnant or the course of pregnancy.
• Fibroid growth or features that require further monitoring and evaluation by a doctor.
If the fibroid is small, does not cause symptoms, and has not affected the patient’s health, regular monitoring as advised by the doctor may be all that is needed.
Depending on the size, location, and number of fibroids, symptoms, age, and reproductive plans, the doctor may recommend:
Regular monitoring: appropriate for cases where intervention is not yet necessary.
Medical treatment: helps control certain symptoms such as heavy bleeding or pain.
Interventional procedures/surgery: considered when fibroids cause significant symptoms, affect health or fertility, or do not respond to appropriate treatment.
Being diagnosed with uterine fibroids does not necessarily mean that surgery is required. The choice of treatment should be made by an Obstetrician-Gynecologist based on each patient’s individual condition.
If you are diagnosed with uterine fibroids, please consult an Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist for evaluation and appropriate management.
